Attendance Clarifications
Page 8 of the 2009-10 Parent/Student Handbook states.... Attendance Policy for Excessive Absences ....10absences in a semester will result in a grade of "F" To clarify, absences are recorded as either Excused or Unexcused. Some parent/guardians have viewed that an Excused Absence does NOT count towards the total of 10 absences per semester. This is not accurate. According to Stratford School Board Policy, (Parent/Student Handbook) and State Law, a student cannot miss more than 10 times in a semester. ANY absence, (whether Excused or Unexcused) is still an absence and Must be recorded in the school attendance register. An Excused absence allows a student to make up work missed. An Unexcused absence does not allow a student to make up work missed. The Parent/Student Handbook goes on to state... Notes or phone calls from parents are appreciated but do not count as an excused absence. To further clarify, the statement above should read...Notes or phone calls from parents are appreciated but do not REMOVE an excused absence. Obviously, Stratford High School will allow a student to make up work missed when a parent/guardian contacts the school. But, the school is required to follow the local policy and State Guidelines and record that the student is absent. The principal has the right to approve (and not count as absent) some activities which are listed on Page 8 of the Parent/Student Handbook. The school cannot and will not go "back" into the attendance records to change data. Contact the school secretary or building principal if you have any questions about attendance. We apologize for any confusion this may have created.
